After five months of imprisonment, the dauntless Grebel asked permission to have his prison manuscript printed. Such exasperating audacity provoked an aggravated response. The rebuff to Grebel’s request came on the heels of a second trial, which was held on March 5 and 6, 1526. The day following a sentence of life imprisonment was passed upon all the defendants. On the same day a new mandate made the act of performing baptism a crime punishable by death. But the life imprisonment was of short duration.
